Men in the US are being advised to refrain from engaging in sexual activity after unprotected sex following the recent US Supreme Court decision in Pfizer's Viagra guidelines.
In the new guidance, the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will not require men to abstain from sexual activity until they are sexually aroused by taking the drug Pfizer's Viagra.
The agency said that a “comprehensive review of the guidelines, including recommendations on the amount of alcohol and the appropriate dosage, will be conducted to determine whether Pfizer’s Viagra remains the drug of choice”.
The review, which is also expected to be a long way from the recent FDA approval of Viagra, also concluded that, on its own, Viagra is the only medication approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The decision was made after the FDA issued an advisory about the possibility of taking Viagra.
While Pfizer said it was not planning to approve Viagra for recreational use, it is allowed to prescribe any medication it believes may be safe for use.
“Patients who do choose to take Viagra should discuss any contraindications and any possible side effects with their physician,” the FDA said in its advisory.
The drug's maker Pfizer said it is “comprehensive in our view that a person with erectile dysfunction can take Viagra and continue to use it”.
It will still be possible to obtain a prescription from a physician to take Viagra, though it is still not clear how much Viagra is to be taken.
A Pfizer spokesperson said: “This guidance is a reasonable response to the public interest and does not constitute medical advice.
The Food and Drug Administration said: ‘This guidance was not intended to be a substitute for clinical judgment.’Dr David Phillips (left) and Dr Helen Tiefer (right) discuss the new guidance on ViagraThe agency will not accept an offer to prescribe Viagra to anyone who has taken Viagra for a long time.
It is unclear why the FDA was not aware of such an offer but said that the agency will work closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure patients who have taken Viagra have no adverse reactions to the drug.
The agency said it would review the guidance and determine whether Pfizer’s Viagra remains the only medication in its Viagra guide, which was updated to include ‘medication for erectile dysfunction and sexual performance’.
How to take Viagra and how to avoid side effectsPfizer said it was not planning to take Viagra for a long time because it had ‘no indication that it is effective’ for the condition and ‘not recommended’ for its use.
As of March 2023, Viagra was the only medication in the Viagra guide that has been approved for use in men with erectile dysfunction.
Pfizer’s Viagra has been available since 1998, when Pfizer first marketed the drug.
The FDA said: “The agency believes that this guidance is reasonable in light of the available research and clinical evidence that supports its use in treating erectile dysfunction.
“Pfizer believes that the information provided by the FDA on this topic is relevant and helpful.”
Dr Helen Tiefer said: “The FDA has reviewed many studies on Viagra and has concluded that there are no effective treatments for erectile dysfunction.”
The FDA said: “The current guidance is not intended to replace clinical judgment and is a reasonable response to public interest.”
The advice on the Viagra guide was released under the supervision of the F. D. A. and was only available to doctors who have been authorized by the FDA to prescribe Viagra. However, the agency is not allowed to prescribe Viagra without a doctor's prescription.
How to prevent Viagra overdoseThe guidance said: “Sexual activity should be avoided if possible in patients who take Viagra or any other medication to treat erectile dysfunction.”
The FDA said: “Consuming alcohol, particularly by itself, should avoid the side effects of Viagra.
“It is also important to note that Viagra is not a replacement for a doctor’s consultation regarding treatment decisions in a patient population with underlying health conditions or medical conditions that can interact adversely with Viagra.
